Punk Rock HR

Punk Rock HR is authored by Laurie Ruettimann.  Laurie is brash, bold, stratight-forward, smart, and snarky.  Oh, and did I mention cute?  We’ll, lets just say she’s the total package.  I’ve been reading her blog for years and she is the person that inspired me to write mine.  Why should you read Punk Rock HR?  She posts answers to some tough HR and business questions, she posts humor, and she rants and raves occasionally too.  Another plus, if you write a comment to Laurie, she always responds.  Even if she has 100 comments.  You’re important to her.

Bottom line: A++ for her honesty and integrity.

Know HR

Frank Roche of iFactual has a blog I just do not ever skip reading.  If he writes it, I’m reading it.  What I like about Frank is that he doesn’t necessarily post like other bloggers.  Some of his most inspiring posts may only be a sentence or two.  He’s direct and when you read the wisdom of Frank, you have those “ah-ha” moments.  Another plus is that Frank will use whatever means necessary to reach out to you.  He writes, he uses video, pictures.  All things to grab your attention and not let go of your brain all day.  Of all the blogs I read, I keep more of his posts than anyone else’s. Bottom line:  Smart guy, smart writing.  Read it.

Paul Hebert makes me a better person.  He makes me a smarter business professional.  He makes me question what I know and what I don’t know.  He makes me think about employee motivation and intelligence in a whole new way.  He can do the same for you.  Paul writes these incredibly smart posts that often make me pause before commenting.  It’s because I want to live up to the thought he puts into his posts by giving equal thought to my response.  I also recommend Paul’s blog because if you are in HR and only focus on pure HR blogs, you will miss quite a lot of great information. Bottom line:  Challenge your brain and read Paul’s blog.  You’ll be glad you did.

Michael Long, the Red Recruiter, has been instrumental in developing my social media skills.  He was the person who made me pick up a phone and *meet* him.  He was the person who encouraged me as my blog was new.  He was the person who has supported my efforts every step of the way.  Michael has helped so many people learn how to use social media to meet people in the industry.  Long before Twitter had lists, it was Michael who created the #FollowHr hash tag so that HR and recruiting professionals could find each other easier. His blog is one that sprinkles personal thoughts and bits about his life into the business advice he gives.

Steve Boese, author of ‘Steve Boese’s HR Technology‘,  has been one of my biggest supporters.  He has included me many, many times in his HR Happy Hourradio show on Blogtalk Radio.  He was also one of the first people to jump on board with the first HRevolution un-conference. Steve spent countless hours making arrangements so that HRevolution would be a success.  Since then, we’ve collaborated on e-books, posts, speaking engagements, and business ventures.  He also opened my eyes to HR technology, an area of HR that I never felt comfortable with until this past year.  You will learn something every time you read his blog.  It is often interwoven with sports, culture, and BBQ.

Mike Krupa is the author of Infobox.  He’s one of the smartest HR tech guys around and always willing to share his ideas with me.  When I met him in person at the HR Technology Conference last fall, it was if I had known him forever.  I know that I can pick up the phone and call him day or night.  He also writes a great blog  that leans to the tech-minded but throws in enough snark to keep it interesting.

Seiden Leadership-  This blog, by author, acclaimed speaker, and advisor to SmartBrief Workforce Jason Seiden, is one of my “must reads” every day.  Jason is the author of two highly successful business books; ‘How To Self Destruct‘ and ‘Super Staying Power‘.  Jason’s blog mixes solid leadership advice with humor and a good dose of snark.  He covers everything from business to politics to music.  Best of all, Jason tells you how to LIVE.  I don’t mean like all kumbaya.  I mean, he tells you how not to be a jerk, how to be a better colleague, a better boss, a better friend, a better parent.  That’s pretty damn cool.  Now go, read his stuff.  Oh, and be sure to reach out to him because he’s someone you’ll want to know.
Inflexion Point-  Mark Stelzner.  Need I say more?  I don’t think I do, but I will for the sake of this being a blog I just told you I’d tell you about.  Mark is a respected industry leading consultant who guides us on all things related to business strategy and operations as it relates to human resources.  He is an advisor to SmartBrief Workforce and also founded Job Angels, a grass roots movement to help job seekers.  Mark’s writing style is direct and is often in story-telling mode.  When you read his posts, you’ll feel as if you’re on the journey with him, not just reading something where you’re on the outside looking in.  I think that is one thing that makes his blog so special.  You become PART of it with him.
Simply Lisa- Don’t let her blog’s title fool you, there is nothing simple about Lisa Rosendahl or her blog.  Lisa is a seasoned HR pro and blogger who has been recognized by more industry experts than I can list here.  Suffice to say, she’s a writer you need to follow.  Lisa brings the practical, “in the trenches” side of HR to you in her blog.  She also brings a unique spin on all aspects of human resources.  Throw in a little on social media and some posts on how Lisa personally deals with challenges and you’ve got a great blog to add to your reader.
tHRyving-  Kelly Mitton authors this GenY blog.  While relatively new to the space, don’ t let that or the fact that she’s early in her career stop you from subscribing.  It’s the main reason I read her posts.  She brings a fresh look to some of the old, tired processes of HR.  Kelly tells us what is on the mind of college students and those recent graduates as they enter the HR arena.  She is basically like a coach for all of us who have been doing this job for a long time.  And, we NEED her.  What a great opportunity to hear from someone like Kelly so that we can understand what motivates our future leaders.  So, take a moment and head over to her blog.  She’s definitely thrYving!
