One of the best parts of attending unconferences is that you not only meet intelligent professionals, but you get the opportunity to hear them speak, even if they are not on the “official” track list. Recently, I had the privlidge of meeting Gordon Lokenberg, founder of Lokloq mobile recruitment solutions. Lokloq develops mobile apps for job boards and large recruitment companies. I met Gordon recently at TRU London and was immediately struck by the amount of insight and information he has when it comes not only to mobile recruiting, but mobile technology in general. He pulled together a track on the spot and went over many cool apps. I am sharing a couple of my favorites that he told the group about.

Layar App for Android and iPhone

Layar- This is an augmented reality browser app for Android or the iPhone. By using the camera and GPS in your device to “see” where you are, the app adds layers of information based on your location. So, you may be on a city street and see the street layered with restaurant and bar information. Or, you might see homes for sale. It gives you options to see the data you are interested in.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Skyhook- Is a wireless positioning system. Skyhook goes beyond traditional GPS in determining the location. It also considers information from wi-fi positioning and cell towers so that the result is the most accurate location possible. It works well indoors and outside. I have the MyTouch android phone and when I searched apps for Skyhook, there are several to choose from that use the technology. This definitely works indoors and I am very impressed with the level of detail it gives beyond the GPS alone.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Shazam- This is an app that let’s you take a “musical journey”, according to their website. Basically, when you hear a song or clip of music, you start the app. It “listens” then searches to find the song. I’ve tried it with radio, CDs, and TV and it works every time. It then brings up a host of information on that particular song such as the album, genre, the band’s MySpace page (if they have one), and gives you options to purchase the song. It then tracks your playlist for you.

So, try one of the new apps. Oh, and be sure to check out Gordon’s site for lots of great mobile recruiting information. Cheers!

How often do you come across a global company that truly works to ensure that their culture supports the culture in the community? Any company names come to mind? Well, I had the privilege to meet executives from a company that does.

Jobsite.

Jobsite UK (Worldwide) Ltd. is one of the largest online recruiting sites in the UK. There are some unique qualities that Jobsite has that are clearly making them stand out against their competition. One thing that makes them unique is their section called Be My Interviewer. In this section of their site, job seekers can choose to practice interview questions with leaders from many top UK companies. The interviews are pre-recorded sessions where the business leader asks key questions they would typically ask during an interview. They also record each leader’s recommendations of the type of answer they would expect or be looking for from a candidate. It’s an innovative concept that will certainly help job seekers prepare and helps Jobsite position itself as a thought leader in creative outreach for candidates.

What I find most inspiring is the way Jobsite supports their community. They are the proud sponsor of the Portsmouth Football Club. Portsmouth, UK, site of the Jobsite headquarters, relies on the football club as a source of jobs and income for the city. And, while the club is having some financial difficulty at this time, it has not halted the enthusiasm Jobsite has to support them. They understand just how much it means to the city and to their employees to have this team. They also do many other community service events to show their support and dedication to Portsmouth, aka “Pompey”. Click here to see some of the things they are involved in.

As the platinum sponsor of TRULondon 2, Jobsite helped provide a unique un-conference experience for many people who had never experienced such an exchange of ideas. The fact that they were progressive enough to embrace something relatively new speaks volumes about the kind of company they are. They not only were the premier sponsor, they were presenters and participants. And I don’t mean the kind of companies who come to a conference to tell you how great they are. They were active participants in the leadership conversations and the recruiting strategy conversations. They were a seamless part of the experience.

Following the event, several key execs hosted some of the TRU London attendees at a football game. For the US readers, this means I had the opportunity to attend the most exciting “soccer” event I have ever been to. Dare I say the most exciting sporting event I have ever been to. It was just amazing. With Jobsite as the sponsor of the Portsmouth, UK football club, we were given the full VIP treatment. We learned the chants and the songs, we stood, we cheered, we even had the fortune of being able to walk out on the pitch (field) during halftime for some amazing pictures.

Why do I tell you this? Because once again, Keith Potts and Felix Wetzel were not there to try to put on the hard sell about Jobsite. It was clear to see they are passionate about Jobsite, about their home-town football club, and about the community of Portsmouth. After all, it’s where they are based. They, and their employees fully support this team.

So, next time you are looking to do business with someone, look beyond the slick flyers and booths.

Who ARE they?

What do they really stand for?

Do they support their community, and does their community support them?

If not, point them in the direction of Jobsite and tell them to take a lesson.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I’m not a paid endorser of Jobsite. But, I think I could have a shot as their next model. What do you think?

On my recent visit to London for the un-conference TRU London, there were many “secret” or unplanned tracks. One that never did take place but got a lot of wordplay was one for the Bald Men of HR. Now, being at an event like that, there are bound to be some balding or bald headed men. I actually think it is quite attractive, but that is a whole different post.

Back to topic- what was joked about was that there are quite a few bald men in HR who are really smart, witty, and engaging.

I don’t know if there is any scientific proof that they have more brain power or influence than their hair adorned counterparts. I do know that those I met and knew certainly fall into the “highly knowledgeable” and “influencing” category. I decided to make the rounds and talk to as many at TRU London as possible. The result?

Well, many interesting and engaging conversations occurred. I also documented my experiment (with help from Jessica Miller Merrill and Maha Akiki). So, here’s a little slideshow of some of the great men I had the fortune to speak with. Included are Geoff Webb (co-founder of TRU London and the host of other TRU events), Andy Headworth, John Ingham, Steve Boese, Jim Stroud, and Alan Whitford.

During a recent session I participated in at TRU London, we were discussing leadership and the conversation turned to whether or not someone even needs a background in human resources to BE in human resources. A couple people came out and said you could just take an operations guy or marketing guy and move them to HR, no problem.

Well, as someone who has been trained in HR, this immediately made me want to wave a red flag!

Sure, you can take someone with a background in other areas and migrate them successfully into HR. But, that needs to be done with quite a bit of on-the-job and external training on employment law, compensation planning and strategy, recruitment and sourcing strategy, just to name a few. That said, I know it can be done successfully.

For me, the key is not having one “perfect” HR person who encompasses all the skills and abilities.

It’s about building your HR TEAM so that collectively you have strong HR skills, strong business skills (finance, marketing, communications), social media skills, etc. Then, the team can cross-train each other so that everyone becomes a stronger player on the team.

But, for those people who ask me what skills I think the “perfect” HR pro needs, I’m including a post I wrote last year that outlines that.

Building the Perfect HR Professional

Sugar and spice and everything nice? No, that doesn’t sound right. Maybe it’s more like Steve Austin, the six million dollar man- building someone who is stronger and faster. No, that’s not it either. So what does it take to build the perfect HR professional?

I’ve heard people who say that in order to be successful in human resources, you must have a Human Resouce degree. Others say you MUST have a PHR or SPHR certification in addition to your degree. Still others say you should not have a HR degree or certification, you should be an MBA with real-world experience. Just this past week at the Senior HR Executive Conference I heard some of these ideas plus executives who believe that you can take someone with operations experience and turn them into the perfect HR pro. So, who is right?

The answer is simple: there is no “perfect” recipe. It depends on the company, work environment, culture, and role the person will fill. Certain skills are paramount to being a strong business professional regardless of whether that person is in HR, marketing, advertising, finance, or operations. What this conversation and debate tells me is that there are currently HR professionals out here who could be doing more to demonstrate their value. I assert that if you only have a HR degree, certification, MBA, or operations experience, you will not be the ideal HR pro. You need to have skills from each of these components in order to truly be a successful business leader. There are some key skills you can focus on obtaining or improving that will ensure you will be able to remain relevant in 2010 and beyond.

Strong human resource knowledge

This is a MUST. Now, obviously this can be learned in a degree program or by studying for certification, but it goes beyond that. It involves REAL LIFE experience working with employee issues. You must have experience

actually picking up the phone and recruiting candidates

interviewing candidates in person for all levels in the organization

investigating reported issues

coaching and counseling

understanding and applying HR related laws

handling the compliance (I-9′s, Visas, etc.)

developing talent through strategic and tactical approaches to training

Finance and Internal Communications

These are areas where many HR professionals are weak. From a finance and accounting standpoint at a bare minimum you must be able to understand general accounting principles and be able to read and interpret a balance sheet. If you cannot do that, you need to set that as a goal. How can you advise your CEO, CFO, and other company leaders if you cannot interpret the financial results of the company? Strong financial acumen will help you drive the business forward. Then, in terms of internal communication, you need to be able to effectively communicate the policies of the company in a way that aligns with the company strategies. For more detailed information on how to improve your skills in this area, check out the HR 101 series by Victorio at the Creative Chaos Consultant blog.

Innovation

The HR professional of today and the future needs to have the spirit to innovate. It is critical to success. If you plan to sit back and just do the day-to-day role, you will not help move the company forward. Our world changes fast and innovative ideas will be the catalyst to propel your HR career. Challenge yourself each day or week to come up with an innovative way to handle something differently. Hold your feet to the fire to make sure you are accountable for keeping your department from getting stagnant.

Global Effectiveness

Technology has made the world a much smaller place. More companies are global than ever before, so more HR professionals need to have an understanding of what is going on in global markets. Are you making yourself aware? Are you reaching out to gain understanding of other countries laws, financial systems, and culture? This is something you should focus on if you are not already. Today’s HR leaders are responsible for driving the success of people around the world.

HR Technology

To the average HR generalist or specialist, HR technology is the “big bad wolf” of the story. It’s the one thing we’re all afraid of. In order to really be successful at running an effective human resources department, you need to have a solid understanding of your current HR technologies as well as staying abreast of emerging technologies. You will need to understand how to evaluate your systems effectiveness as well as be able to identify technologies that will support the data needed to make strong business decisions for the company. A good place to start is by reading and following blogs by Naomi Bloom, Steve Boese, Michael Krupa, and Bryon Abramowitz. You should also follow the writings of Bill Kutik at Human Resource Executive Online.

So, how do you measure up? What other skills do you believe are critical to being a successful HR professional in the future? Let me know in the comments.

Today we embark on another Work/Life discussion in my ‘Leader’s Series’ with Bill Boorman of the UK firm Bill Boorman Consultancy. For those who do not know Bill, he is quite a force in the Recruiting/HR/Social Media space. He not only runs a successful firm, he is the founder of TruLondon (The Recruiting Unconference London).

As a reminder, it was a discussion that started back in October about whether or not the need for work/life flexibility was generationally driven and what can be done to make it work. We’ve heard from Eric Winegardner of Monster.com and from me. Now it’s Bill’s turn. Please take a moment to watch his video blog on his ideas of work/life flexibility. Also, Bill will be hosting a conversation about this topic today on GoogleWave. We’re adding all the HR/Recruiting people we have wave addresses for. If you have not been added, DM me on Twitter @TrishMcFarlane or add your request to the comment section. The wave will begin at 4:00 pm EST/ 9:00 pm in London. Enjoy!
