Austin, Talent and Job Stress

March 12, 2012

It’s Monday morning and I’m just back from several days in Austin, TX for Talent Net Live and a bit of SXSW.  It was an amazing three days and I’m still digesting all the great ideas I heard.  This week, I’ll be sharing thoughts on the Talent Communities panel I was part of, Pinstripe Talent’s Talent Mindset concept, social platforms and networking, and more.

I flew American Airlines and had a great experience.  Flying can cause stress and anxiety and I heard a story this morning about an American Airlines flight attendant who let it get the better of her on a flight from Dallas to Chicago.  It brings to question whether there should be strict guidelines on flight attendants to ensure they are physically and mentally capable to fly.  If you haven’t seen it, check it out and let me know what you think.

  • As a frequent business flyer I would say the overwhelming majority of flight attendants are extremely competent, professional and courteous. However every once in a while I run into an attendant who is having a bad day.

I suspect part of the problem is that flight attendants are not very well paid. Over the past ten years the airlines have been forced to squeeze costs so tightly that employees pay has not kept up with inflation. I know a flight attendant who has 18 years with the same major airline who earns less than a new college grad in IT or Accounting. Better training AND better compensation and benefits would go a long way toward solving this type of situation.
