Ten Conference Commandments

Do you go to conferences in your industry?  I spent the early years in my career wondering what the real value was and living with the misunderstanding that it was only about what I could learn at a specific session.  As I’ve grown in my career and as I’ve been to many different types of conferences  through the years, I’ve learned that it’s really about what I put into it.

What am I going to focus on?

What situations am I going to insert myself into in order to gain better understanding of something?

Who should I meet to make my network stronger?

What are the takeaways that I most hope to achieve?

SHRM invited me to come to the event and I am looking forward to putting my conference plan in action.  I’ll be sitting in the back row tweeting and writing to share my take on the events with you.  This is the first SHRM Annual that I’m attending so I know what it’s like to watch it from a distance.     Good post other there, Trish. Here is what I wrote:

    #8: If the conference truly values the education they offer, they will distribute printed handouts of the presentations. Yes, a tree will die in North Carolina because of it, but what is the price of education? Take your notes right on the handout, not in a separate medium like you iPad or whatever. So you have what was on the screen and what the speaker said about it all in one place.

    Not stated. You are very generous about sharing your experience by tweeting it out. But for most people, I would say it’s better to spend the time LISTENING and learning. Live tweeting only requires what the speaker says to enter a quarter inch of your brain. Listening gets it right into the core. Of course, if it’s your way of taking notes, see #8.
