Help Me Blog: Your Best Memory from 2010

December 31, 2010

It’s New Years eve and I am not going to fall into the trap of predicting anything.  Last year I joked about it when I used my Magic 8 ball to make the predictions.  This time around, I think it would be more fun to share one favorite memory from 2010 and I want you to join me.  It can be:

personal

professional

funny

sad

ironic

It can be whatever you want to share.  Make it a short sentence or a long paragraph.  I just want to hear all the best that 2010 had to offer us collectively. Now for the hard part….what is my best memory?  I’ve had many fun and memorable times this year, but the best single moment in time took place in September and has to do with being really proud of someone else.

I was at my son’s first tykes football game of the season with most of my extended family.  It was one of those great fall days with just a touch of chill in the air.  The boys were all excited to put the weeks of practice into play and the tykes cheerleaders (including my daughter) were already shouting words of encouragement to the boys.  The game got going and I could tell that Jack was excited.  How?  He kept waving up at us in the stands after every play.  Thank goodness he’s seven and not seventeen! Suddenly, a run play started and my little boy had the ball.  He ran, he turned, he serpentined through the boys on the opposing team.  Then, in a flash he was free of the group of boys and headed to his first touchdown ever!

I was that mom standing up and cheering him on at the top of my lungs along with his sister and the rest of the crowd.

Best moment ever!!

What’s yours?

  • Having one of my favorite students call me excitedly with the news that she passed the PHR.

That, and buying a new house and selling the bold one (especially in this market)

    • @Matt- Those are two great moments and I’m glad you shared. I specifically remember you tweeting when you sold your house and I was SO happy for you. What a wonderful year! And, I’m certain that your student (was it Callie?) was thrilled to have you as a mentor during the process.

  • Mine is a collective one of getting involved in HR social media. I have made so many great connections and friends through that decision that it made what could have been a average (or below average) year one of great awakening. One particular highlight was HRevolution where all these people I only knew existed in cyberspace became real. Thank you and Ben and Steve and Crystal..and anyone else who was instrumental in that event. 2010 hopefully set the stage for a great 2011.

    • @John- I’m glad that was your best moment(s). You’ve been a great friend and I’m thrilled you came to HRevolution. I hope we can find a way to get you to the next one in April. Happy New Year my friend!

  • Alaska Cruise. Been on my bucket list for a long time.

Flew to Seatle-drove to Vancouver-Ketchikan/Hoonah-Icy Strait Point/Skagway/Juneau/Hubbard Glacier/Seward-drove to Anchroage-flew home to Maine. Whales, sunsets, balcony cabin, train rides, Deadly Catch Experience with EAGLES!!!!, glaciers. Imagine the biggest place you can – Alaska is bigger. Life on a cruise ship was deeply relaxing. Interviewed ship HR Manager and got the article published – Available @ http://www.hrtimesonline.com/Maine/articles/actualArticles/ThreeSheetsSmith.html For more stories on the Alaska cruise, visit http://www.maineforestcafe.com

    • @Robert- Ok, your best moment(s) make me want to take a trip to Alaska! It sounds amazing. You had me when you mentioned whales and sunsets. Wow. I will definitely check out the write up you did. thanks for sharing that link. Happy New Year and thanks for sharing.

  • My favorite memory of 2010 is by far my college graduation. It was 12 years in the making and I was able to share it with my parents, my sister, my aunt, and most of all, my children. I think they were more proud of me that I was! It was great to see the light in their eyes as their mom walked across the stage that cold, cold day to get her degree. Highlight of my year, for sure!

(I know this has nothing to do with HR, but I wanted to share it anyway)

    • @Trisha- Wow! Congrats on such a huge accomplishment. That speaks to your perseverance and what an example that sets for your kids. Glad you could experience that feeling in 2010. Happy New Year!

  • Is it shallow to say the South Carolina Gamecocks winning the College World Series? That was a big moment for me.

Aside from that, I guess I would say getting to attend and participate in numerous events like HR Florida, HR Southwest, and HR Technology in 2010, and meeting and seeing again many of the smart and talented people in the HR space.

    • @Boese- It figures that the Gamecocks would come into play somehow in this post. (just teasing) Glad you were able to get out and about in 2010 on the conference scene! Happy New Year Steve.

  • It was a huge year! If I had to pick just one it would of course be the birth of my beautiful daughter Chloe! 2010 was a year full of blessings and I am truly grateful. Thanks for the post Trish, have a safe and Happy New Year.

    • @Chris- thanks for sharing and congratulations on adding Chloe to your family. That truly is a best moment! Happy New Year!

  • Steve, as long as you opened that door, I need to add the Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup and the Hawkeyes winning 2 bowl games in one year….

  • Trish, my big stand out moment was the Monster drinks party on the first night of HR Evolution! Getting the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people for the first time, with everyone being exactly as I imagined, was a real high. Eternal thanks to you and the HR Evolution team for making it happen…and a very happy New Year to all of you!

    • @Mervyn- Mervyn, that was one of my best moments too. Having you make the trip to the US to join me was wonderful. Thanks a million my friend!

  • Mine is an easy one: HR Tech 2010. It was the first time I went to conference because I wanted to, not because it was all that specific to my job. I had just started writing seriously a month or two earlier, and was hoping to meet some of the people that I’d been cyber-stalking.

Traveling alone, I headed to the opening night reception with a few names in mind, none of which showed up. But I met a few others that night who seemed nice. Then, for no reason I can really explain, I got on Twitter (still not being sure what the value of Twitter was at that point) and mentioned that I hadn’t met the people of interest. A few minutes later you responded and invited me to meet up with you and Steve Boese. An hour after that, was sitting with the two of you and a few other luminaries.

That week led to a lot of learning, not to mention new colleagues, an appreciation for social media, and an awakening of some long forgotten goals that had retreated to the back corner of my subconscious. It not only made 2010 a great year, it has set the stage for an even better 2011. So thanks to you all, not to mention April, Shauna, Paul, Mike, Mark, Laurie and John for being so welcoming from the very beginning.
