Gratitude in a Sometimes Ungrateful World

October 15, 2010

I woke up this morning feeling thankful.  Thankful for family and good friends.  Thankful for a job, and not just a J-O-B to collect a check, but a job I am passionate about showing up for each day.  What better way to spend a Friday by thinking of all the good things I am grateful for?

I want to share a couple:

  • I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate on the Women of HR blog with Lisa Rosendahl, Shauna Moerke, and all the other contributors.  We shared some of the motivation behind creating the site on the HR Happy Hour show last night.  Be sure to give a listen if you missed it.  AND, let me know if you have any interest in being a contributing writer at Women of HR.
  • I’d like to thank Al Gore for creating the Internet.  Well….you know what I mean.  Seriously, being involved in social media helped me have a relationship with China Gorman, so I’ll thank Al Gore and whomever necessary for that one.  China is a real inspiration to me on a daily basis.  Seeing her in person this week just solidifies that.  Thanks China.
  • I’m thankful for my friend Sarah White.  For reasons too numerous to name, just “thank you Sarah” for being you.
  • I’m SO thankful for people who are “real” and tell it like it is.  #1 in that category for me this week is Laurie Ruettimann.  Sure, we all see the snarky side on her fantastic blog, The Cynical Girl.  What you don’t all get to see is the fierce friend that she is.  LUV her!
  • And, it’s not all about women.  I’d like to say how grateful I am for the following men in my professional life because each of you made a difference for me this week:  Steve Boese, Ricardo Moreno, David Cook, Eric Winegardner, and Jason Seiden.  Special thank you to Jason and Steve for being my partners in crime at HR Southwest in the session on social media.  Loved our presentation!

So, who are you grateful for this week?  Come on….I know you want to tell me in the comments….. Let’s see how many we can get!

  • And I am grateful to you, darlin’, for your continued contribution to making the HR profession a better one.

  • I am grateful to be alive and healthy. I am grateful for every single customer I have had, both good and bad. I am grateful to the bad bosses, as they made me know what it is to have a good boss. I am grateful to the great bosses I have had. I am grateful to Trixie and Trigger, as they make the tough times so much easier. I am grateful for all of the great musicians I have played with. I am grateful that I have the use of all four limbs, as this is something we take too easily for granted. I am grateful for the bad experiences, as they teach me how to cherish the good experiences.

The world is a wonderful place, even as bad as it seems right now. We should all be grateful for being in this wild, wooly and wacky world. I left out a few people, but they know who they are and I try to let them know how grateful I am to have them in my life every time I see them.

    • @Doug- What a wonderful list! I especially love that Trixie and Trigger are on the list. Shows that you are such a caring person. Glad you commented.

  • 1. I’m grateful for my amazing wife.
    2. I’m grateful for my beautiful daughter.
    3. I’m grateful for my supportive family.
    4. I’m grateful for my fantastic friends.
    5. I’m grateful to live in a world where I can work in a career that excites me every single day – just awesome!

Thanks for reminding us Trish! I’m grateful for your post 😉

    • @Michael- Thank you. You’re such a special person. xo to you, Kel, and Sophie.

    • @Steve- Nice and simple. I’d add on sauce, the smoker, a lawn chair, and a good bottle of beer.

  • Trish: Gratitude is a powerful thing. I think one of the most impressive qualities you express is gratefulness. It’s one of the characteristics that make you undeniable force for good. It’s an honor to know you and I love supporting you — whatever you do. When I’m CEO and you’re CHRO we’ll rule the world! 🙂

    • @China- Thank you China. I’ll rule the world with you anytime my friend!

  • I am thankful for the wonders of technology. I can read, learn, enjoy, and reflect because of writers, practioners, and thinkers like you and everyone who has commented here.
