I find it interesting and very positive that the panel’s focus is not on the tools themselves, but on the reasons to use them. It’s all about communicating in an effective way with more people. It’s about being able to create and grow a relationship with a colleague half way across the world.
My friends at Rypple are doing great things to help organizations like yours build a culture where feedback is the norm. That’s a HUGE thing to accomplish because you and I both know that there are many great companies out there that don’t give employees enough feedback. We all think it should be something that we do, then we make excuses as to why we don’t do it. We don’t have time, it doesn’t feel natural, or we want to but other “fires” come up and coaching takes a back seat. This is when you need to reach out to Rypple.
In the workplace, we’re given problems to solve and projects to lead. Can you imagine that the type of thinking the leader has will have a direct impact on your solution? It certainly will. And, the team that the leader puts together will also have a strong impact on the method used to find that solution in addition to contributing to the creativity (or lack of) of the solution.
As much as I may criticize it, it’s a lot like the workplace. Mine and yours all have those people that SOMEONE deems as having star quality and we just scratch our heads.
I decided to focus the little time I have this morning to read some great posts by other HR pros and leaders, comment on their posts, and share links on my site.
I am going to make a mental note to approach performance evaluations from this angle from now on. Sure, I’ll still tell managers all the great reasons that by documenting it can help them improve performance, but the MAIN thing is to really celebrate achievements.
Whether you go or not, I’d like to find several people willing to have this conversation in your own organization and report back here. I’ll summarize all we learn and publish it after the conference.
