A Saturday Rant- Celebs Paid to Tweet

Posted by & filed under .

So, I just heard another story about how companies are spamming Twitter users.  Celebrities, and I use that word VERY loosely, are now being paid per tweet to recommend certain brands to all their followers.  Some get up to $20,000 per tweet.  People like Holly Madison (Hef’s ex-girlfriend) and Kim Kardashian are now tweeting to their followers about certain products in hopes that will increase sales.

This is the very reason I don’t like to follow a bunch of celebrities on Twitter.  I guess it was only a matter of time.  I would probably pay to use Twitter if I could be guaranteed there would be no spam.  What do you think?

I believe that spam will always exist in some form or fashion. For that reason, I’ve come to peace with spam. I have a de-spamifying (is that a word?) routine and I don’t let it get to me. My two-cents…

Bravo! I feel pretty much the same way. Blame Twitter too. They only “verify” famous named accounts, which further enhances the “it’s a real celebrity” spamming me so it must be legitimate and safe mindset.

I read a popular internet marketing blog, and the guy talks about it all the time. He makes some good $ by tweeting stuff to his followers who value his opinion. There’s no chance in H-E-double-hockeysticks that I’ll be buying any of that crap.

@Sharlyn- Everyone needs a de-spamming (word I’m crediting to you from now on) routine. My solution is not to follow celebs. Except Dane Cook and Dave Navarro because I think they’re great and they don’t spam. :-)

@DL- I hadn’t thought about “verified” celebs enhancing the real celebrity spamming, but you’re right. I’m sure that give it credibility in the eyes of their followers. Great point.

@Ben- thanks for the comment. Love that you get fired up about a lot of the same things I do!!
